Privacy Policy
The short version: Tax Captain has no account and no server, so there is nowhere for your records to go. Everything below is the long version.
Who this is about
Tax Captain ("the app") is provided by the operator of tax-captain.com ("we", "us"). Contact: support@tax-captain.com. This policy covers the mobile app and this website.
What we collect
Nothing. We do not operate a server that receives your data, we do not have accounts, and we do not use analytics, advertising identifiers, crash reporting or tracking of any kind.
We cannot see your trips, your expenses, your receipts, your location or how you use the app. Not because we choose not to look — because the app does not send any of it to us.
What the app stores, and where
All of the following is created by you and held only in the app's private storage on your own device:
- Trips, including the GPS route recorded while a trip is being measured
- Places you save — home, work sites, suppliers, customers
- Expenses, and the receipt photographs you attach
- Vehicles, odometer readings and logbook periods
- Your settings and the classification patterns the app learns from your corrections
- An activity log of what the app did, which records events and never coordinates, merchant names or amounts
This data is removed when you delete the app, or through Settings → Danger zone → Reset all data. It may also be included in whatever backup your phone makes (iCloud or Google backup), which is governed by Apple's or Google's own terms, not ours.
Permissions, and why
Location
To measure the distance of a trip. Background or "Always" access is needed only if you switch on automatic detection, which is off unless you turn it on. Location data is used on the device to produce a trip and is never transmitted to us.
Motion and fitness
To tell driving from walking, so automatic detection knows when a drive has started. Used on the device only.
Camera and photo library
To photograph a receipt or attach one you already have. Photographs stay in the app's private storage.
Notifications
For the reminders you switch on, and for the notice Android requires while a trip is being recorded. All scheduled by your phone, on your phone.
When the app does use the internet
The app works offline. There are three things that reach the internet, all of them optional in the sense that the app functions without them, and none of them involve us:
Map tiles
When you look at a map, the pictures are fetched from OpenStreetMap or, if you choose satellite, from Esri. Those providers see the request — which includes your device's IP address and which part of the world you are looking at — under their own privacy terms.
Address lookups
Turning coordinates into an address is tried first with your phone's own built-in geocoder (Apple or Google, on the device). If that finds nothing, the coordinates are sent to Nominatim, OpenStreetMap's public geocoding service, which sees those coordinates and your IP address. No other information about you is sent with it.
Sending something yourself
When you export a report or email feedback, the file goes wherever you send it, through the app you choose. Nothing is sent without you initiating it and choosing the destination.
Receipt text recognition runs entirely on your device. The photograph is not uploaded anywhere.
Sharing and disclosure
We do not sell, rent, share or disclose personal information, because we do not hold any. If you email us for support, we hold that email and anything you attach to it — including an activity log, if you choose to include one — for as long as needed to help you, and we do not use it for anything else.
Children
Tax Captain is a business record-keeping tool and is not directed at children.
Your rights
Under the Australian Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles you generally have the right to access and correct personal information an organisation holds about you. In our case the answer is straightforward: we hold none, and everything the app holds is already in your hands — readable in the app, exportable as CSV or PDF, and deletable by you at any time.
If you believe we have mishandled information, email support@tax-captain.com. If you are not satisfied with the response you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
This website
tax-captain.com is a set of static pages hosted on GitHub Pages. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics. GitHub may log requests, including IP addresses, as part of serving the site; that is covered by GitHub's own privacy statement. Web fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which receives the request for those font files.
Changes
If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted here with a new date below. Material changes will also be noted in the app's changelog.
