Why it is built this way
Tax Captain is made and run by one person in Australia. It started because keeping a logbook properly is tedious enough that most people stop, and the apps that promised to fix that wanted an account, a subscription and a copy of everywhere you had been.
No server, on purpose
Every other decision in this app follows from one: there is nowhere to send your records, so they are not sent. No account, no cloud, no analytics watching which screens you open. Your driving is your business.
It makes some things harder. There is no syncing between phones, and if you lose the phone without exporting, the records go with it — which is why exporting is one tap and the app nags about it. That is the trade, stated plainly rather than buried.
A record keeper, not an adviser
The app suggests whether a trip reads as work and explains its reasoning, and it says so when it is unsure. It will not tell you what you can claim. That line matters: a tax opinion is something a registered tax agent gives, and software that blurs it is selling confidence it has no basis for.
The same principle runs through the numbers. Every figure shows its working. A total the receipt's own arithmetic confirms is labelled differently from one the app guessed at. If the odometer says you drove further than the app recorded, the report prints the difference instead of hiding it.
Built by using it
Nearly everything in Tax Captain exists because something went wrong on a real drive and needed fixing. Trips that came back short. A receipt read as ten times its value. A logbook that quietly stopped reminding anyone. The app carries a detailed activity log because the alternative was guessing, and guessing cost several releases.
