Three things it does properly

Notices the drive

Switch on Watch for drives and the phone works out when you have set off, measures the trip, and puts it in front of you to confirm. Nothing is ever recorded as finished without you saying so.

Reads the docket

Photograph a receipt and it fills in the merchant, the date, the total and the GST, then checks the figure against the receipt's own arithmetic and tells you which it could confirm and which it had to guess.

Adds up at the end

One tap produces the year as a PDF, an HTML page or a CSV, with the receipt photos attached and the odometer accounted for. Email it straight to your accountant.

A page of the trip ledger from a sample year-end report. Every drive, how far, what it was for, and which side of the line it falls on — with the commute kept apart from the work.

Sample data, not a real person's year. The app suggests work or private for every trip and writes out why — you confirm or change it.

It stays on your phone

There is no sign-up, because there is nothing to sign up to. Tax Captain has no server and keeps no copy of your records — your trips, receipts and photographs live on your device and go nowhere unless you send them yourself.

That is not a privacy promise built on a policy. It is how the app is built: there is no account to breach and no database to leak. The privacy policy spells out the few occasions the app does reach the internet, and what it sends.

See everything it does

An honest record, not a tax opinion

Tax Captain suggests whether a trip looks like work and explains why, and it will tell you when it is not sure. What it will never do is tell you what you can claim. That is a question for you and a registered tax agent.

Every figure it produces shows its working, including the ones that do not add up. If the odometer says you drove further than the app recorded, the report says so rather than quietly absorbing the difference.
